When Is the Best Time to See the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are most visible in Rovaniemi from late August to mid-April, with the best window being September to March. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons to help you plan:

  • Autumn (September–November): This is our favorite time for aurora hunting! The skies are often clear, and you might see the lights reflecting on calm lakes, creating a stunning double glow. It’s perfect for first-time viewers.

  • Winter (December–March): Winter brings snowy landscapes and strong aurora displays. But there’s a chance of cloud cover, so we stay flexible to find clear spots.

  • Early Spring (February–March): The skies start clearing up, and days get longer, giving you more time to enjoy Lapland’s beauty alongside the lights.

We schedule our tours to maximize your chances, starting at 8 PM to catch the aurora’s peak activity, which often happens between 6 PM and 2 AM. Whether it’s autumn or winter, we’ll help you find the perfect night!

How We Hunt for the Northern Lights -Chasing the Northern Lights is an adventure that mixes science, local knowledge, and a bit of magic. Here’s how we do it at Lapland X Tours:

  • Real-Time Tracking: We use live aurora forecasts and weather updates to find the best spots. If clouds roll in, we’re ready to drive up to 500 km—even crossing into Swedish Lapland—to find clear skies.

  • Local Expertise: Our experienced guides know Rovaniemi’s top locations, from quiet forests to open hills, where light pollution is low and the aurora shines bright.

  • Transparency All the Way: We’ll share the route, show you live forecast data, and keep you updated on where we’re headed. You’ll always know what’s happening!

  • A True Hunt: Our tours last 5 hours or more, giving us plenty of time to chase the lights. Sometimes we spot them multiple times in one night—it’s not just waiting around, it’s a real adventure!

Staying Safe in Arctic ConditionsLapland winters can be chilly, with temperatures dropping to -15°C or lower, especially from December to March. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Here’s how we keep you safe:

  • Prepared for the Cold: Our guides are trained for Arctic conditions, and our vehicles are equipped for snow and ice. We’ll make sure you’re dressed in layers—think waterproof outerwear, insulated boots, hats, gloves, and neck warmers to stay warm.

  • Stay Cozy: We provide hot drinks to keep you toasty, and we’ll take breaks if you need to warm up. Our goal is to make sure you’re comfortable so you can focus on the aurora.
